And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. — 1 John 2: 1
We need Jesus Christ as our advocate with the Father. “Far be it from You to do such a thing as this … Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Genesis 18: 25). With these forceful words, Abram once pleaded with God to preserve the righteous in the city of Sodom. These events remind us of a trial situation, in which a defender, an advocate, presents points of view that exonerate the defendant. Abram made reference to the righteous in Sodom, in other words, to those who held to God in faith. He himself was regarded as a righteous man by God (Genesis 15: 6).
Abram speaks up for the righteous in Sodom. Our advocate is Jesus Christ, who intercedes before God on our behalf out of love. For this reason, His intercession motivates us to increasingly avoid sin. This is demonstrated in our remorse, regret, and willingness to act in a manner that is pleasing to God.
